Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona, Spain, and is regarded as one of the leading figures of 20th-century contemporary art. Early in his career, he was influenced by artists such as Paul Klee and began as a Surrealist painter. He soon moved toward Abstract Expressionism, later developing a distinctive practice incorporating non-traditional materials—an approach often associated with Arte Povera. In 1953, he began working with mixed media, which would become one of his most significant contributions to art. By the late 1950s, he had already gained international recognition. Tàpies’ ideas had a profound impact on global art, particularly in the fields of painting, sculpture, and printmaking. His works are held in major museums around the world, and in his hometown of Barcelona, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies is dedicated to exhibiting his work.
