Layers of SilenceThe texture of the painted surface wears the very thickness of time.
There lies the atmosphere of night, where deep indigo darkness quietly wavers and gathers; a silence carved by a horizontal line that splits the canvas and a texture resembling weathered concrete; a presence holding its breath between pale purple and green; a gradient shifting from orange to purple; and a quietude where light blue, peeking through the clouds, expands softly without end.
What resides here is not the event itself, but the texture of time that settles after the event has passed. Colors that bleed, melt, become mottled, and sinkâeach work holds its own silence. Perhaps it is only by pausing and lingering that we can, for the first time, touch these strata of time.
Nagi - time suspended at the boundaryThis edition of âCuratorâs Pickâ is a collaboration with Gallery MOS, based in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, which introduces emerging Japanese-style painters. We present the work of Yumina Komura, who paints quiet landscapes.
This time, the theme is "Nagi - time suspended at the boundary."
Each work carries within it a boundary line. Sky and land, sea and ship - the forms differ, but across each line, texture shifts slowly. Within a dark, settled surface, only a white line rises to the eye; against a brown ground, color bleeds and spreads. The line between sky and sea blurs, refusing any fixed contour, and a single boat rests quietly upon it.
Each texture, in its own way, brings the stillness of the landscape into presence. Not a sharp boundary, but a surface that shifts gradually - and it is this shift that gives the landscape its quiet, distinct presence.ââââââââââââââââ
Dreams and NarrativesFragments of stories floating between reality and dreams. We present a collection of works where a childlike perspective meets a strangely familiar warmth, intersecting within the realm of memory.
What emerges in the space between sleep and waking is the memory of a half-forgotten slumber. Tiny shadows gathering secretly inside a oversized garment, the presence of night dissolving into a bold red shape, and innocent eyes quietly gazing back from atop a blue container. Eerie yet endearing creatures, seemingly slipped out of an ancient picture scroll, play together, while faceless figures exchange quiet words on a staircase.
These scenes evoke both nostalgia and a subtle disquiet, offering us a curious sense of intimacy. A space where emotions prior to words and the lingering echoes of forgotten dreams gently resonate. Like the stories we encountered in our youth, they may softly untangle the hard contours of our reality.
