Memories in Light and HueThis edition of âCuratorâs Pickâ is a collaboration with THE OBSESSION GALLERY, which introduces contemporary Impressionist painters from Japan and abroad. We present the works of French artist Marie Rauzy, the great-great-granddaughter of master painter Paul Cézanne, who seamlessly weaves techniques refined at the prestigious Ãcole des Beaux-Arts with a distinct contemporary sensibility.
This issueâs theme is âMemories in Light and Hue.â
Floating within fluid, sweeping backgrounds are cats, bouquets, still lifes, dreaming young girls, and outstretched hands. Rendered with meticulous yet soft brushstrokes, these motifs craft a world both dreamlike and serene.
Across these canvases, a vivid brilliance of light and color merges with an abstract spatial silenceâas if intimate moments of daily life are quietly dissolving into memory. Halting the rush of time, the work evokes a deep sense of quietude and emotion, unfolding a rich dimension within the painted realm.
Mottled
From Trace to ImageOn the surface remain unmistakable traces of the maker's touch upon the material.
These are the marks of "time in process" itself - etched through the kneading of clay, the carving of wood, the layering of lacquer. Each trace draws its own rich gradation, distinct to every work.
In some, the raw texture of the carved material emerges just as it is. In some, a single light line is redrawn upon the base surface. In some, countless incised marks transform into geometric patterns. In others, bold planes of color or imagery rise up against the quiet presence of the material itself.
From the very touch of earth and wood, to color and form, and finally to a single "image" - we trace one continuous path spun together by material and hand.
