Hauser & Wirth Menorca is an oasis of culture where contemporary art and nature harmonize in the historic Isla del Rey. When one thinks of a commercial gallery, the image that often comes to mind is a white-cube space with works neatly arranged. However, this unique initiative of Hauser & Wirth offers a new paradigm for galleries, extending far beyond the conventional framework of a space for exhibiting and selling art.
In conversation with its history
A mere 15-minute ferry from Mahón, Menorca's largest town the port of Mahon, will take you to the island of Rey, where the gallery is located, and you will be greeted by a restored 18th century military hospital.
Built by the British Navy in the 18th century, this hospital served as the island's primary medical institution for centuries. However, as the island's military significance waned in the 20th century, the hospital fell into disrepair.
In 2005, a local foundation was established to preserve the site's historical and cultural value. Thanks to their efforts, the hospital was restored and transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving the island's heritage. In 2021, with the vision of creating a cultural hub that harmonizes with the island's historical and natural heritage through art, Hauser & Wirth arrived and brought the project to its current state.
As if embodying this vision, the gallery spaces and the restored buildings on the island are arranged at a comfortable distance from each other, as if they had always been there. Rather than simply constructing new buildings, Hauser & Wirth's approach involves restoring existing structures with a deep respect for the island's history. In this island where the fresh wind of contemporary art blows through buildings steeped in history, visitors can enjoy a timeless dialogue unlike that of a typical gallery.

The exhibition space is equipped with numerous windows and doors leading outside, allowing visitors to appreciate the artwork while feeling close to nature. The gallery’s unique feature lies in its ability to enjoy the scenery specific to this location, such as the sunlight streaming in and the ocean view from the windows.
Harmony with nature
As you walk through the grove of olive trees and circumnavigate the island, you can feel a seamless harmony between nature and art. Designed by the renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, the island's garden features plants that were originally native to the island. The plants on the island are all naturally tended and blend seamlessly into the island's landscape, making simply walking around the island a pleasure. The flowers and trees are planted naturally without detracting from the buildings or the scenery, and one can feel the attention to detail.
By encompassing the entire island, it offers a way to enjoy art that goes beyond the framework of a typical "gallery." As proof of this, visitors to this gallery are not only art lovers who frequently visit galleries, but also many people who come to spend a leisurely time on the island. With a lovely restaurant and spaces to relax on hammocks within the island, it is a place where people can enjoy not only art but also rich experiences in their own way.
